  SPORTS BRIEFS: Gyanu Baba's third consecutive title win

KATHMANDU, Dec 26: Gyanu Baba Academy won the title of the Fourth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament for the third consecutive time. The defending champions Gyanu Baba defeated Fishtail 3-0 in the final match held at the Bishal Multi Sports Training and Tournament Center, New Bus Park on Saturday.

Gyanu Baba scored 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 against Fishtail to collect a total of 23 points in the league. Out of the 12 matches played, Gyanu Baba had lost the first match against Fishtail. Fishtail finished second with 22 points.

In the other matches of the day, Nepal Police and New Diamond emerged victorious. Police ousted Angel Heart School 25-17, 25-12, 25-10 while New Diamond struggled past PLA 25-14, 22-25, 15-25, 25-13, 15-12.



Police had to remain content in third position with 21 points while Angel Heart collected 18 points to remain in fourth position. The top three teams bagged a purse of Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.

PLA and New Diamond both accumulated 15 points but PLA moved ahead in fifth position based on the average points. Deep Jyoti stood seventh with 12 points.

Fishtail´s Sipora Gurung was declared the best player of the tournament. The best player was decided on the basis of the spectators´ votes. Sipora received 2170 votes. She was declared the best player in the second edition of the tournament as well. Meanwhile, Gyanu Baba´s Manju Gurung bagged the most valuable player award.

Likewise, New Diamond´s Ramila Tandukar, Gyanu Baba´s Manati Ale, PLA´s Binita Budhathoki and Kaushalya KC of Gyanu Baba received the awards for best spiker, best defense, best setter and best coach respectively.

Altogether seven teams participated in the event organized by Dhorpatan Volleyball Training Center.


Aslesha clinches double victory in junior tennis

KATHMANDU, Dec 26: Aslesha Lissanevitch clinched double victory in the finals of the girls´ U-14 and U-16 matches during the Eighth Jaykar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament held at the Satdobato Tennis Complex on Saturday.



Aslesha thrashed Geeta Shrestha 6-0, 6-0 in the final match of U-14 girls´ singles. Likewise, Geeta Shrestha and Mayanka Rana won the titles of U-12 girls´ singles and U-10 girls´ singles respectively.

In the boys´ singles, Achal Thapa, Neeraj Wagle, Ivan Hoe Lissanevitch and Pranav Khanal won the U-16, U-14, U-12 and U-9 titles respectively.


Pokhara Valley win football tournament

POKHARA, Dec 26: Pokhara Valley Sports Club emerged victorious in the Kaski District Level Late Balaram Memorial Third League-cum-knockout Football Tournament on Saturday after defeating Sahara Club 2-1 in the final match held at the Pokhara Stadium.

Raj Kumar Ghising and Prakash Thapa contributed a goal each for the winners while Naresh KC scored a consolation goal for Sahara. Suman Ligal of Sahara was declared man-of the-match.

The winners bagged a purse of Rs 40,000 and the runners-up received Rs 25,000. Nepal Army´s Eastern Division Headquarters and 13 local teams of Pokhara had participated in the event.
