DHANGADHI, April 5: The first convention of the UML-aligned Nepal Democratic Tharu Association has decided to push for the division of the whole southern plain into three Tharuhat provinces for administrative purposes.
The Tharu Association took a decision to this effect during its convention in Dhangadi on Tuesday.
We decided to save the plains from secession through the process of Madhesization, said the Association´s General Secretary Baldev Chaudhary.
Representatives from 24 districts had participated in the convention. “There are various ethnic groups and communities in the Tarai. So the whole of the Tarai cannot be turned into a single province.
According to Chaudhary, the areas from Morang district to Siraha district should be made Eastern Tharuhat, from Dhanusha to Nawalparasi Central Tharuhat and from Dang to Kanchanpur Western Tharuhat.
He said that his organization would discuss the issue with the UML and other political parties and launch peaceful protest programs.
He also demanded proportional representation of the Tharus in the government machinery.
