  School scorns raped student

DIL BAHADUR CHHATYAL

DHANGADHI, March 13: The Durga Higher Secondary School of Kailali district that grabbed headlines after rusticating a girl student -- who recently became a single mother after being raped by her father´s friend -- on the charge of moral misconduct has firmly refused to take her back.

“There is no point in taking the girl back,” the school´s principal Tul Bahadur Saud told reporters on Friday. “Those people who cry for a girl´s rights should not overlook the rights of 2,500 students. We do not want to corrupt so many students by letting a deflowered girl join the school.”

However, giving in to immense pressure from all corners, the school´s management committee has decided to let the girl appear in ninth grade exams starting Friday.

“We will allow the girl appear in the exams, honoring the suggestions of District Education Office (DEO),” Saud said.

“However, we can not even think of taking her back.”

The 14-year-old girl -- who was allegedly raped by one of her father´s closest friends Amar Bogati, 45, nine months ago -- had delivered a baby boy just three months ago. The girl had not disclosed the incident even to her own parents, fearing social ostracism.

However, the very act of cloaking the heinous incident cost the girl dearly. The school accused her of “moral misconduct”. Meanwhile, the accused Bogati, during an interrogation by police, has accepted that he raped the girl.

District Education Officer of Kailali Hem Raj Pujara has asked the school to nullify its previous decision of expelling the girl. “It is not appropriate of the school to further victimize the girl instead of protecting her,” Pujara told reporters.

This is feudal mentality and it cannot stand. Young people need honest sexual education for responsible, mutual behavior. Access to birth control and punishment of rapists when an older man abuses a school girl.

Treated her as "shameful" is the real shame. She is a brave young woman, now a mother and education is her birthright.

Has the rapist Amar Bogati been punished? Is he in prison or responsible for support for the child he forced on t [more]
